Mega Rayquaza comes to Shinjuku from the stratosphere.

Seeing a Rayquaza is a pretty special occasion for Pokémon fans. According to franchise lore, the Dragon/Flying-type spends most of its time soaring through the stratosphere and munching on meteorites, so Rayquaza sightings are rare, whether we’re talking about within episodes of the Pokémon anime series, battles in the video games, or packs of the trading cards. Encountering the species’ evolved form, Mega Rayquaza, is an even rarer experience, but that’s what fans are getting to do in downtown Tokyo right now, at a venue that lets the Legendary Pokémon fly by in life-size.

The Mega Rayquaza can be seen at Shinjuku Wall 456, a video display inside the underground pedestrian passageways connecting to Shinjuku Station. With Mega Rayquaza’s official Pokédex entry listing its length at a massive 10.8 meters (35.4 feet), there aren’t too many chances to depict it in 1:1 scale, but Shinjuku Wall 456 is up to the task thanks to being a 45.6-meter-long array. So not only can you get a sense of Mega Rayquaza’s true size, but its speed as well, as it zooms from one side to the other.

▼ The display is also 1.7 meters tall, letting it show off Mega Rayquaza’s intimidating girth.

So why is Mega Rayquaza in Shinjuku these days? Because it’s the flagship species of the new Ruler of the Skies expansion for* Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket*, the digital version of the Pokémon Card Game, which launches on July 30. So in much the same way that a famous actor or actress might do a series of interviews before the premiere of their latest movie, so too is Mega Rayquaza on a press tour of sorts, with the Pokémon Company promising that we’ll be running into Mega Rayquaza “in various places” this summer.

If you want to get an eyeful of the Shinjuku Mega Rayquaza, Shinjuku Wall 456 is located in the “Tozai Jiyu Tsuro” east-west connecting passage which is situated just outside the East Gate and West Gate ticket gates of JR Shinjuku Station. As the wall is outside the gates, there’s no need to buy a ticket to get there.

Do bear in mind, though, that as a very busy Pokémon, Mega Rayquaza no doubt has lots of places it needs to be and space rocks it needs to eat, so it won’t be sticking around forever, but it will be appearing on Shinjuku Wall 456 through August 2.
