Japanist
/ˈdʒæpənɪst/nounThe Japanist is a person who has a deep interest in, knowledge of, and often a strong affinity for Japanese culture, history, language, and society. This interest can manifest in various ways, such as studying Japanese language and literature, engaging with Japanese art and music, following Japanese current events, or even living in Japan.
Essentially, a Japanist is someone who is devoted to the study and appreciation of Japan and things Japanese.
Our mission
The Japanist is building the definitive English-language resource for people who want to become Japanists — not only visit Japan. We combine long-form cultural explainers with live, data-backed tools: festival and fireworks calendars, cherry blossom and autumn foliage forecasts, a JMA-oriented earthquake tracker, and practical travel planning.
Who runs The Japanist
The Japanist (thejapanist.net) is operated by Snack Software, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company. Questions, tips and correction requests reach us through the contact form.
Sources & editorial standards
- We prefer primary and official sources: JMA, government ministries, JNTO, and the official pages of shrines, temples, cities and organizers. Private forecasters (such as the Japan Meteorological Corporation) are named when we cite their forecasts.
- Each curated festival guide lists the sources it was checked against and the date of that check. Automatically compiled event listings are kept out of search indexes on purpose.
- The Japanist does not republish third-party news. The former syndicated news section was retired in October 2026; our original reporting lives in the long-form articles.
- Dates are Japan Standard Time (UTC+9). Japanese terms include romanization.
- Partner links (currently Akiya X) are marked as sponsored, and articles about a partner disclose the relationship.
