A proposed name for a new middle school in Fukuoka, Japan, has drawn criticism due to its overlap with a WWII kamikaze aircraft. The name, Ohka Middle School (桜花), uses kanji for "sakura" and "flower," but also evokes memories of the MXY-7 Ohka flying bomb.
A controversy has erupted in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, over the proposed name for a new middle school merging Hakko and Amagi Middle Schools. The suggested name, Ohka Middle School, intended to celebrate cherry blossoms (sakura), shares its name with a WWII-era kamikaze aircraft.
Local civic groups have voiced concerns, arguing the name is inappropriate for an educational institution due to its association with the suicide weapon. The committee responsible for the suggestion admitted they were unaware of the historical connection during the selection process.
The Omuta board of education will reconsider the name, with a final decision expected in February before the school's scheduled opening in spring 2027. Travelers to the region may find the discussion offers insight into local sensitivities surrounding historical memory and symbolism.
