Fukugawa Festival
Koto City, Tokyo
About the Event
The Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri is one of Tokyo’s three biggest Edo festivals, also known as the “water-throwing festival” because people throw water on the mikoshi (portable shrines) carried through the streets. The main celebration, Hon-matsuri, occurs every three years (2026 next), featuring over 50 mikoshi. The Tomioka Hachiman-gū, the host shrine, has the heaviest mikoshi in the Kantō region, though it’s usually on display due to its weight and valuable decorations. The festival spans five days with taiko, koto, and dance performances. The Hon-matsuri, featuring over 50 mikoshi, is scheduled for Sunday, August 13th, 2026.
