Wakakusa Yamayaki Festival
Wakakusa, Nara
About the Event
The Wakakusa Yamayaki is an annual festival held on the 4th Saturday of January in Nara, during which the grass on Mount Wakakusayama is set on fire. Festivities begin at noon with events like giant rice cracker throwing, followed by a procession to light torches at Mizuya Shrine. A bonfire is lit partway up the mountainside around 17:30, and a fireworks display occurs at 18:15. Afterward, the grass is set alight, gradually spreading across the mountain, a spectacle visible throughout Nara. Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, and Kasuga Shrine are all involved in the ceremonies.
