When it is held

The Nanki-Shirahama Fireworks Festa (南紀白浜花火フェスタ, Nanki Shirahama Hanabi Fesuta) is the summer fireworks show at Shirarahama Beach (白良浜) in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture. It is organized by the Nanki-Shirahama Tourism Association.

In 2026 it was held on Monday, August 10, from 8:10 to 8:40 pm, with Sunday, August 23 at the same time as the reserve date in bad weather. In 2025 it was also planned for August 10, but bad weather pushed it back to the reserve date, August 24, when it went ahead.

The show

About 2,500 shells are launched in 30 minutes. In 2025 they went up from Gongenzaki (権現崎), the cape on one side of the beach, from Ponporo-jima (ポンポロ島), the small island on the other, from a barge in the bay, and from boats that drop fireworks into the water. These underwater fireworks (水中花火, suichū hanabi) burst in the water of the bay, and starmines and underwater starmines are the highlights of the show.

When the weather makes the barge unusable, the organizers plan the show from Gongenzaki, Ponporo-jima and the boats alone.

Where to watch

The beach itself is the viewing area. There is no admission charge and no paid seating; you watch from the sand with the fireworks reflected on the sea. Arrive early to find space on the beach, and bring a mat to sit on.

There were no food stalls at the 2025 festival, so bring water and anything you want to eat.

Getting there

  • By train: from JR Shirahama Station, take a bus of about 14 to 15 minutes toward Sandanbeki and get off at Shirarahama, right by the beach.
  • By car: about 10 minutes from the Nanki-Shirahama interchange of the Kisei Expressway via the Flower Line prefectural road. Roads around the venue are closed during the show; the tourism association published a traffic restriction map for the 2025 festival. In 2026 the festival car park was at the site of the former Nanki-Shirahama Airport, with no shuttle bus.

Tips

  • If the weather looks doubtful on August 10, check the tourism association's site on the day; it announces postponements there.
  • The show lasts only half an hour, so be settled before 8:10 pm.
  • Shirahama is a hot-spring resort, and staying the night avoids the post-show traffic.
  • Other events on the beach, such as separate ticketed music festivals, are not part of the Festa; check which event you are booking for.
